6 Signs You Need to See a Dentist in West Palm Beach

Not sure when it’s time to see a dentist? Many people wait until pain or discomfort becomes unavoidable — but early detection can prevent serious problems and expensive treatments down the road. In this article, Dr. Melisande Wolff of Presidential Dental Center in West Palm Beach explains six clear signs it’s time for a dental visit, what they might mean, and why prompt care matters for your health.

1. Bleeding, Swollen, or Red Gums

Listen, if your gums bleed when you’re eating, flossing, or brushing your teeth, that’s your body waving a big red flag at you. Bleeding or swollen gums are some of the most important signs you need to see a dentist right away because they’re the first indicators of gum disease.

Here’s something that might surprise you—over 80% of people have some form of gum disease! And here’s what really concerns me: untreated gum disease is linked to 57 different diseases throughout your body. I’m talking about serious conditions like heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, high blood pressure, and yes, even erectile dysfunction for all you men out there.

When you come to see me at Presidential Dental Center in West Palm Beach, I’ll do a comprehensive periodontal probing along with x-rays. This is the only way to definitively diagnose gum disease—there’s just no way around it. You know what my patients usually tell me? They say they’ve never had this done, or maybe it was done once many, many years ago. When I do the probing, I show them what all those numbers mean and exactly how their gum health is being affected. It’s eye-opening!

So please, don’t ignore those bleeding gums. Give us a call at 561.686.8580 and let’s get you checked out.

2. Persistent Tooth Pain or Sensitivity

If you’re dealing with a toothache or severe pain in a tooth, I’ve got news for you—it didn’t just happen overnight. You probably felt some pain a while back, then it went away and you thought, “Great! Problem solved!” But now it’s back with a vengeance, and it’s worse than ever.

Here’s what I want you to do: come see me immediately so we can get you out of pain and solve whatever’s causing this discomfort. These are definite signs you need to see a dentist, and waiting will only make things worse.

When you come in, I’ll take an x-ray of the problem tooth and probably another one on the opposite jaw in the same area. Why? Because tooth pain can be tricky—it can refer from your top jaw to your bottom jaw and vice versa. I’ll also take an intraoral photograph of the area where you’re having the complaint.

Then I’ll do a limited exam with some testing on several teeth in the area. I might tap on your teeth, feel around the gums near the tooth roots, and even use something cold to see how you react. I’ll also ask you lots of questions—when you last saw a dentist and why, what your diet looks like, your oral hygiene routine, your medical history, and any medications you’re taking. All of this helps me figure out what’s causing your toothache.

Once I know what we’re dealing with, I’ll offer you different treatment options to get you out of pain. Sometimes it’s temporary relief until we can complete further treatment, and sometimes—I’ll be honest with you—we might have to “retire” your tooth and remove it. But ultimately, it’s your body and your mouth, and you get to decide what treatment makes sense for you. The important thing is getting you comfortable again so you can enjoy that upcoming vacation or just sleep through the night!

3. Broken, Cracked, or Damaged Teeth

Okay, this is one of the sneaky signs you need to see a dentist. Even if you have a broken or cracked tooth or filling and it’s not hurting you right now, please come see me immediately! I know it seems like it can wait, but here’s the truth—without treatment, it’s guaranteed to hurt in the future. And when it does hurt, it’s going to hurt a lot.

Worse yet, you might end up having to lose that tooth because you waited so long that it can’t be saved anymore. I don’t want that for you!

Here’s what happens: if it’s just a broken filling leaving a big hole in your tooth, food gets stuck in there every time you eat. It’s hard to keep clean, so the chances of developing a cavity go up every single day. Or maybe there’s already a cavity under that old filling (which is probably why it fell out in the first place), and it’s definitely getting bigger and deeper with each day that passes.

The sooner you come to see me at Presidential Dental Center, the more conservative and less expensive your treatment will be. You might even avoid needing a root canal! You’ll spend less money, less time in my dental chair, and you could avoid pain altogether. That’s what I call a win-win-win situation! Call us at 561.686.8580 before that small problem becomes a big emergency.

4. Bad Breath That Won’t Go Away

Let’s talk about something that can be really embarrassing—chronic bad breath, or what we call halitosis in the dental world. This is definitely one of those signs you need to see a dentist because bad breath can happen for so many different reasons.

Sometimes it’s due to systemic problems in your body, but often it’s from long-standing infections in your gums, issues with your tonsils, the types of food you eat, your oral hygiene routine, or even certain medications you’re taking. Fun fact: those popular injectable weight loss drugs like Ozempic can cause bad breath as a side effect!

Managing your bad breath could be as simple as me teaching you how to brush and floss better. Or you might need some type of gum treatment to address an underlying infection. The only way to know for sure is to come in and let me figure out what’s causing it.

When you visit me at www.presidentialdentalcenter.com, I can create a custom plan just for you so you can correctly manage your bad breath and feel confident again. Nobody should have to worry about their breath when they’re talking to people!

5. Jaw Pain, Headaches, or Facial Discomfort

Do you have persistent pain in your jaw or facial muscles? Do you get headaches all the time, especially when you’re stressed out? These are important signs you need to see a dentist, even though you might not immediately think “dental problem” when your head or jaw hurts.

With a comprehensive exam, I’ll check out your jaw joint (we call it the temporomandibular joint, or TMJ for short). I’ll analyze your bite and see how your teeth come together and function in different planes when you’re chewing. I’ll also look at how much wear and tear there is on your teeth. All of this helps me figure out what’s causing your jaw pain or those nagging headaches.

Once I understand what’s going on, I can create a plan to treat your specific issues and give you advice on how to follow through with it. This leads to fewer headaches and less jaw or facial muscle pain. Remember, every mouth and body is different, so you need a bespoke plan that addresses your unique situation. One-size-fits-all just doesn’t work in dentistry!

6. Sensitivity to Hot, Cold, or Pressure

If you feel a sharp zing or sensitivity in a single tooth or anywhere in your mouth when you eat or drink something hot or cold, or even when you’re just brushing your teeth or breathing in cold air, something is definitely not right. This is one of those signs you need to see a dentist so we can figure out what’s going on.

Let me tell you a story about one of my patients. I did a filling on him about three months ago, and when he came in last week for his regular hygiene visit, he mentioned that the tooth I’d worked on had been sensitive to cold for those entire three months! I told him I’d do an exam and figure out what was causing it. He said he’d looked on Google and thought maybe it was an infection or something worse.

Well, I checked the filling and it was in perfect condition. The sensitivity was actually coming from a different part of the tooth below the filling, where his gum had receded. I recommended a simple, conservative desensitizing treatment. I let him know it’s not permanent and might need to be repeated in the future, but he was totally fine with that. After a quick two-minute treatment, I ran my explorer over that area again, and he was amazed—he felt nothing at all!

He said, “I can’t believe I didn’t know about this treatment.” And you know what I told him? “If you don’t come in to see me, then I can’t help you solve your problem. You didn’t have to live with this discomfort for three months.”

Why Early Dental Visits Matter

Regular dental check-ups help catch problems before they escalate. According to dental experts, most adults benefit from professional exams and cleanings at least once or twice a year, adjusted based on individual risk factors like gum disease or chronic conditions.

Routine visits also allow dentists to monitor bite function, screen for oral cancer, and address small issues before they become painful or costly.
